ZIMBABWE, Harare : Zimbabwe's opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) Secretary General Tendai Biti holds a news conference in the Harare on December 15, 2008. MDC accused President Robert Mugabe's government of planning to institute a state of emergency as an excuse to disregard rule of law. "We have no doubt as a party ZANU PF that they are going to declare a state of emergency " stated Biti.

ZIMBABWE, Harare : The front page of Zimbabwe local government owned newspaper the Sunday Mail is displayed in Harare on December 14, 2008 A draft constitutional amendment paving the way for a unity government was published in the government gazette Saturday, the first step toward bringing it to parliament for approval. A copy of the draft obtained by AFP names opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai as the new prime minister, and sets out the powers of the new office. The draft appeared to give Mugabe the power to swear in Tsvangirai even before parliament approves the amendment, a process that could drag on for weeks.

Swaziland: Journalists harassed, beaten and detained
On 13 December, two journalists working for the privately owned Channel Swazi television station, Zakhele Mabuza and Kwanele Dlamini were reportedly harassed, beaten and detained by police whilst they had gone to cover a story in Mbabane, the capital city.

Joy Radio station resumed broadcasting on 16 December 2008; 30 days after Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) revoked its broadcasting license for non-compliance with the Communications Act and licence agreement.

18 December 2008: MISA Namibia appeals to judiciary to take into account challenges faced by journalists when presiding over defamation cases
In a news article published in the New Era newspaper, on 8 December 2008, the High Court is reported to have ruled that New Era Publications Corporation and four other defendants should pay N$ 50 000 jointly and severally, with interest of 20 percent on this amount, in damages to Deputy Minister of Youth, National Service, Sport and Culture, Pohamba Shifeta, for two articles published in 2006.

Joy Radio Closure - Big Blow To Media Diversity
Dec 11, 2008 (The Tribune/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) -- THE Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA-Malawi) has described the revocation of Joy Radio broadcasting licence as a big blow to media diversity. Commenting on the closure of the radio by the authorities, MISA-Malawi Chairperson Brian Ligomeka said while government had its own good reasons for taking that action, the biggest losers are the listeners.

4 December 2008: Peace and reconciliation message spreads
