18 December 2008: MISA
Namibia appeals to judiciary to take into account challenges faced
by journalists when presiding over defamation cases
In a news article published in the New Era newspaper, on 8 December
2008, the High Court is reported to have ruled that New Era Publications
Corporation and four other defendants should pay N$ 50 000 jointly
and severally, with interest of 20 percent on this amount, in damages
to Deputy Minister of Youth, National Service, Sport and Culture,
Pohamba Shifeta, for two articles published in 2006. Read more |

Radio Closure - Big Blow To Media Diversity ( )

Global Media via COMTEX) -- THE Media Institute of Southern Africa
(MISA-Malawi) has described
the revocation of Joy Radio broadcasting licence as a big blow
to media diversity. Commenting on the closure of the radio by the
authorities, MISA-Malawi Chairperson Brian Ligomeka said while
government had its own good
reasons for taking that action, the biggest losers are the listeners.

bodies lobby Minister of media law reforms in Zambia
On 10 December, 2008, the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA)
Zambia together with other media bodies that included the Press
Association of Zambia, Zambia Union of Broadcasters and Other Disseminators,
Society for Senior Zambian Journalists, Press Freedom Committee
of The Post and PANOS Southern Africa met the newly appointed Minister
of Information and Broadcasting Services, Lieutenant Ronnie Shikapwasha

Uganda gets independent
media council
UGANDA has finally joined Kenya, Tanzania and 25
other countries that have an independent self-regulatory council
of the media.
The Independent Media Council of Uganda was launched on Friday
at the Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala by the chairperson of the
governing board, former prime minister, Kintu Musoke. Read more |
10 December 2008: Lawyers
demand Mukoko’s release
Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) together with other human
rights defenders took to the streets in Harare on 10 December 2008
demanding the immediate release of abducted Zimbabwe Peace Project
(ZPP) Director Jestina Mukoko whose whereabouts remain unknown

MISA calls for the immediate release of Jestina Mukoko
The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Regional secretariat
based in Windhoek, Namibia expresses its deep concern and shock
over the abduction in Zimbabwe of broadcaster and civic leader
Jestina Mukoko. Mukoko was abducted from her home on 3 December
and her whereabouts remain unknown till now. Read more
